DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker International is looking for a career driven, Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician for construction project testing and inspections. MBI is a top leading engineering firm and with our constant growth and evolvement in the construction industry, we are searching for individuals with the same ambition and drive to continue in our success.
A (CMT) technician performs a variety of tests and inspections on construction materials such as soils, deep and shallow foundations, concrete, asphalt, and masonry. They check that the components of each unique structure has been assembled in a manner consistent with its plans and specifications. Design teams communicate their requirements to contractors who build the designs, and CMT technicians help provide the expertise to know it is done right. A CMT technician's typical responsibility includes testing foundations, soils, asphalt and concrete on construction sites. The work environment changes every day as construction progresses, weather fluctuates, and terrain varies from site to site. A CMT technician's role is critical to the construction industry as the tests they perform help to evaluate the contractor's conformance with the plans and specifications that engineers use to communicate their design.
Performing routine material tests and communicating the results is an important part of any project. We do require that a CMT technician be able to physically lift 75 pounds above their head. CMT technicians use several tools and testing apparatuses to check work quality. Michael Baker International can and will provide as needed. There is typically a 2-3-week training period for entry level employees, however previous experience is not required but is considered in the hiring process.
Write detailed reports to employers and clients to describe the quality of the work observed performed and tested each day and any defects, non-compliances or repairs that need to be made. An effective CMT technician is also an effective communicator. They must be able to clearly understand each person's role on the project and accurately report the status and quality of the project to all necessary parties. A CMT technician must be able to give feedback to owners, developers, general and subcontractors as well as geotechnical, civil, and structural engineers so they can help with the production, progress and overall safety and compliance of a positive project.
There are many different career opportunities for CMT technicians and it's a great way to get your foot in the door to the construction industry. At Michael Baker International we are always looking to develop our technicians and elevate them to senior-level roles where they can obtain additional certifications and experience that allows them to work on more high-profile projects.
As you can see, CMT technicians are essential to building projects of all types. Our CMT technicians provide quality control and assurance by monitoring the whole construction process.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Project materials sampling and testing. One of the most crucial materials that we sample and test is concrete. After collecting a sample of concrete, CMT technicians then perform a series of tests. First, they will check the temperature of the concrete followed by an air content test. The air content test is used to evaluate microscopic air bubbles in the concrete that give it freeze thaw resistance and other important properties. Too much air may indicate unintended reactions that may cause the concrete to lose strength. Next, they will perform the concrete slump test, which documents the consistency of the concrete. Finally, strength samples will be made and after initially curing in the field, hardened samples are then returned to a laboratory for storage until they are ready to test. Compaction testing and bearing capacity testing of the soils naturally in place or put in place by contractors to support buildings and pavements. Projects are only successful if the proper materials are placed at the appropriate moisture and sufficiently compacted. Testing soil compaction is an important check on the contractor's work.
